Key considerations when buying a new security screen door

Security screen doors provide a nice look as well as added protection against criminals, bugs and extreme weather. If you are planning to install a new security screen door, you need to look at several features and aspects. This article explains what you should focus on when shopping for a security screen door.

Type of door frame

The majority of security screen door frames are made of aluminum, steel or a metal alloy. Each of these materials can be reinforced to serve as a security door. Nevertheless, given that metal alloy and aluminum door frames are weaker compared to steel, these frames need to be widened to achieve the needed strength. Typical steel frames allow for better air flow and visibility compared to aluminum and metal alloy frames. Although aluminum frames don't rust, they are quite expensive. Steel frames do rust; however, if properly treated and powder coated, the issue of rust could be avoided for a long time.

Type of door mounting installation

Both tube-frame and flush-mounted installation types guarantee security. However, flush mounting your security screen door gives it a more natural look and offers a better seal as there's no space around the opening. In contrast, tube-frame installations cause the security door screen to protrude a few inches from the door opening, given that it's installed on the door trim rather than inside the opening.

Keeping insects and bugs away

How will your new security screen door close and keep away bugs? This is an important question to ask your supplier, especially if you reside in area where mosquitoes and insects are a nuisance. Majority of door installation service providers employ a peel-and-stick foam tape for creating a seal around the door. Over time, that foam tape hardens and cracks, so you will need to replace it. Reputable door companies use felt strips to seal the security screen door. The advantage with felt strips is that they are durable and require zero or minimal maintenance.

To paint or to powder coat?

Paint is not heat-resistant which means it does not hold up well under sun exposure. In fact, a painted security screen door adds another maintenance task to your busy schedule. On the other hand, powder coating can withstand extreme temperatures. The difference between powder coating and paint is powder coating does not need a solvent to keep the filler and binder parts suspended in a liquid state like paint. Generally, powder coating forms a hard finish which is tougher compared to traditional paint.

These are just a few of the considerations when shopping for a new security screen door. Make sure all your questions are answered prior to paying a deposit or down payment to your supplier.
